To me, tithing makes sense. After all, it’s not really our money. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” We are simply giving back what God has blessed us with. Besides, how else would churches function without tithing? The church is made up of people, and it’s the people who must support the ministry. No one is going to do it for them.
The Lord knows what we give and also what we are capable of giving. Although we don’t partake in sacrificial offerings anymore, the story of Cain and Abel comes to mind. Greed is a powerful thing and easily gets in between our Lord and us. We should give our very best to the Lord, just like the widower did in Mark 12:41-44: “Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.’”Wednesday, January 21, 2009
